Design tokens are the API of your brand

Colors, radii, spacing, and type are not decoration. They are an interface contract between design and code — and treating them like one changes how fast you ship.

Every design system has a moment where someone asks for 'the hex code of our blue.' The answer to that question tells you everything about the system's maturity. If the answer is a Slack search, you have a palette. If the answer is a named, versioned value that Figma and production code both read, you have an API.

A token is a promise

A design token is a named decision: --color-brand, --radius-md, --space-4. The name is the contract; the value is an implementation detail. When both your Figma variables and your code's theme object resolve the same names, a rebrand stops being a project and becomes a pull request. Change the value once and every button, card, and chart on both surfaces updates together.

This is the same discipline that makes good software APIs durable. Consumers depend on names, not values. Nobody hardcodes the response body of an endpoint; nobody should hardcode #6366F1 in a component.

Three tiers, not three hundred exceptions

The token systems that survive have layers: primitive tokens (blue-500), semantic tokens (color-action), and component tokens (button-bg). Designers work in semantics, engineers consume semantics, and primitives change silently underneath. Most systems that collapse do so because every exception became a new primitive instead of a new alias.

What this buys you

Pegasus ships 470 tokens across color, type, spacing, radius, and elevation — defined once, consumed by the Figma library and the React theme object. It is the reason the 14-Day Rebrand Guarantee exists: retheming is a token edit, not a redesign. When your brand refreshes next year, your components won't notice.

Treat your tokens like a public API: name them carefully, version them, deprecate them politely. Your future team will inherit an interface instead of an archaeology dig.

One system. In Figma and in code.

Pegasus ships 1,540 components, 470 tokens, matching React code, Storybook, and a local MCP server. $149, one-time.
